INCI Name = Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil (and) Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
Saponification Value: 188 mg KOH / g of Fat Our Ultra Refined Almond Butter is derived from sweet Almonds (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis), specifically from the Mediterranean area, and is obtained by the cold pressing of selected fruits followed by a full refining process. In your cosmetic formulations we feel the behavior of Almond Butter is somewhat similar to that of shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii). A very soft butter with great spread-ability making it ideal for massage butters. It adds moisturizing attributes to creams and lotions and bar soaps. INCI: Argania Spinosa (Argan) Nut Oil
Argan trees product a fruit (nut) that is used by native Moroccan people for their diet and skin care. The oil was once extracted from the nut after a goat ate the fruit. We no longer need to process the nuts through the bellies of goats to get this wonderful oil. Argan is high in oleic and linoleic fatty acids which offer a longer shelf life and great skin care properties. Use in hair care, skin care and especially in lip balms and cuticle oils. This oil is extracted from ripe fruit which has had the shell removed. The shell is actually used as a heating fuel. The fruit itself is cold expeller pressed and the remaining protein is fed to livestock. The oil continues through the processing and is bleached through clay, deodorized by steam and filtered to remove sediment. The oil is now ready for your cosmetics! We suggest using this oil with problem skin like eczema, psoriasis, acne, and sunburned skin. Argan oil has a subtle nutty odor and feels like jojoba oil, light and penetrating, non-greasy. We think you'll enjoy this one! Saponification Value: 192 mg KOH / g of Fat |

INCI = Beeswax
Saponification Value: 94 mg KOH / g of Fat Beeswax has the same sweet, smokey odor as a beehive and will impart many wonderful properties to body-care products. Beeswax is not an emulsifier so do not use it as a substitute for emulsifying wax in a lotion or cream recipe. Lip balms and candles also use beeswax. Cold process soap makers should add beeswax with the other solid and liquid fats when melting, do not wait for trace. Our beeswax comes in an easy to use bead or prill form and is a light yellow. Beads are larger pieces of beeswax, like small chocolate chips. Prills are smaller and will melt more quickly because of their smaller size. Both are pure beexwax. No more chipping away at a large block! If you need help to thicken a sugar scrub please do this: to 1 pound (450 grams) of your oil mixture add 2 to 4 grams of beeswax. Melt the beeswax into the oils and then allow to cool. Use this premixed oil mixture as your formula requires. If you want to use less wax then see Candelilla Wax or Carnauba Wax for details.

INCI = Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax
Saponification Value: 50 mg KOH / g of Fat This vegetable wax is used in lip sticks, lip balms, creams, lotions, salves and body butters. Is often used as a substitute for beeswax in cosmetics and candle applications. In soaps the wax will cause a quickened trace but excessive use can also soften the bar soap. The flakes are so easy to use. Try a lip balm or body butter with this cool new wax. When substituting Candelilla Wax for Beeswax in an existing recipe reduce the amount of wax by half since since Candelilla Wax has twice the stiffening power of Beeswax. If you need help to thicken a sugar scrub please do this: to 1 pound (450 grams) of your oil mixture add 1 to 2 grams of Candelilla Wax. Melt the wax into the oils and then allow to cool. The smell and feel of soaps with cocoa butter will make any chocoaholic go crazy. Lip balms and massage butters almost require cocoa butter for feel and firmness. If you need help making your bar soaps harder, cocoa butter may be the answer. |
Cocoa Butter, Deodorized
|
INCI = Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter
Saponification Value: 191 mg KOH / g of Fat This version of cocoa butter has the wonderful color of fragrant cocoa butter, but no odor. The color is a warm, straw color and will add a rich note to products where the cocoa butter is heavily used. In products that use cocoa butter lightly, I don't expect any color to come through. This version is without the odor because the strong, yummy scent of chocolate isn't appropriate in all applications. I like to think of body butters, lip balms and other salve like products that have fresh, fruity, marine or green scents. These scents shouldn't have to compete or drown out a chocolate odor. So, use deodorized when you need to make something like this. If you are making a vanilla, spice, coffee or chocolatey scented product then you should use the regular cocoa butter. Theobroma Cacao trees have really struggled in the last many years with disease, and the countries that are major producers of cacao beans, and their supplementary products, have been under domestic unrest. All of these problems have cause cocoa butter prices to climb. We are offering this deodorized cocoa butter to help ease the impact of the price increases of cocoa butter. If you absolutely must have White Cocoa Butter, please contact our bulk ordering staff. If the slight addition of a warm yellow color isn't an issue in your product, you will appreciate this price holding strategy by using the deodorized version. As with any product in our catalog, if you have questions, please ask. We would love to help you get from problem to solution as quickly as possible.

If you want an odorless product then use the White, Ultrarefined cocoa butter. If color is an issue the regular and deodorized cocoa butter has a yellow color, the white cocoa butter is white. |

In the spring when sheep are sheared the lanolin is removed from the wool before the wool can be processed into yarns. The next time you wear wool as a sweater, socks, coat or cape, you might wonder how the sheep were able to keep dry during the rain. You certainly know how warm wool can be. Try our Lanolin Butter recipe for an intense hand cream that practically waterproofs the hands. Once you see the water roll right off your skin you will know how sheep stay dry! When added to soaps it gives an exotic feel that is so luxurious once you experience it you may never want to be without it. Shea butter can also be added to creams and lotions or used alone for massage or skin cream. Please remember a little shea goes a long way. Please note: Recently we have become aware that other vendors are suggesting you heat shea butter to 170 degrees F for a period of 45 minutes to prevent graininess. This can be very damaging to the shea butter and will drastically reduce the shelf life as well. Worst of all, it will not work! Shea butter will become grainy, or fractionate, with the addition of heat. Body temperature alone will start this reaction. When shea butter is refined the prevention of graininess is achieved by quick cooling. Our recommendation is to heat the shea butter with your other ingredients just until everything is melted and can be mixed thoroughly. Then cool lip balms and body butters quickly. Quick cooling can be accomplished by pouring your butters into cool containers, pouring shallowly, and cool room temperatures or the use of the refrigerator. Do not use the freezer to firm the products you have just made. Once the shea butter has been made into a smooth fat again freezing will not harm the butter. Graining of shea butter has not been a problem in soaps and lotions. Graining does not make the shea butter bad or harmful, it simply is an appearance issue which may also turn into an unpleasant application issue. Think of rubbing sand across your legs versus a smooth, creamy butter. We thought you would prefer the butter! If you need additional assistance with this heating issue please let us know. We also do a lot of work for those who have formulation or technique problems which encourage the graining to occur. Just drop us a note and we will help. We are very concerned about the proper treatment and handling of this product. We want you to make wonderful products and feel education and the truth will prevail. Expeller pressed, without solvents. |
Shea Butter, Unrefined
![]() Recipes MSDS |
INCI = Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)
Saponification Value: 180 mg KOH / g of Fat Do you need unrefined shea butter for a specific product? or market? We have had several requests for unrefined shea butter. The color is a tad darker and the product has a slight odor. We have seen unrefined shea butter have super dark colors and strong odors because everything, even the undesirable nuts, were processed for extraction. This shea is a close as we can get in an unrefined product to be similar to a refined shea. Happy soap and toiletry making! Expeller pressed, without solvents. |
Shea Oil | |

INCI = Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Seed Oil
Saponification Value: 186 mg KOH / g of Fat Shea Oil has been so much fun! Now as a liquid oil that can be used in lip balms, soaps, body butters and more! We have even been using it as a cuticle oil with nothing more than a little of our favorite fragrance. Shea butter can fractionate. It can also crystalize. While these traits will not harm the butter they can be distracting to the final product. See the Shea butter product description for more details. Shea oil gives the wonderful feel without the problems associated with the butter. Enjoy!

Soybean Oil (hydrogenated)
![]() Recipes |
INCI = Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
Saponification Value: 190 mg KOH / g of Fat Use hydrogenated soy as half of your fats to keep costs down. It is a good filler and makes a very hard white bar when used alone. Solid at room temperature.

Soy Butter | |
|
INCI: Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
Soy Butter has been used in several lip balm formulations to help keep a smooth texture, and avoid the summer fractionation issues with shea butter or cocoa butter. We think it makes a great addition to a salve, lip balm, and lotion bar. The butter is firm but not hard, it is white and accepts oil soluble color easily. Lip balm recipes will be posted in our Recipes section and on our blog at blog.thesage.com The melting point of this butter is about 95 degrees F (35 degrees C). This will help make a nice meltable massage oil. Enjoy!
Stearic Acid | |

INCI = Stearic Acid
Saponification Value: 206 mg KOH / g of Fat Stearic acid is used to make a bar soap harder so it is very useful in all-vegetable oil recipes. It is also used as a thickener in creams and lotions. Paraffin wax (for candles) with a low melt point is made harder with the addition of stearic acid. Our stearic acid is cosmetic grade and is vegetable derived. We use 1/8 oz per lb of fats to make a harder bar soap. |

INCI: Calophyllum Inophyllum (Tamanu Oil)
Saponification Value: 189 mg KOH / g of Fat This product is organic. A great oil for treating lots of skin issues. Because skin is the largest organ of the body we think giving this oil a test is worthwhile. This oil has been used for eczema, psoriasis, and when skin is angry or inflamed. We have a few people on staff that have difficulties when the weather changes, their skin becomes cracked and broken and very dry. Tamanu has been helpful to them and may be helpful to you too. Tamanu is an interesting oil to put in creams and lotions. It smells somewhat like butter pecan ice cream. As the oil is absorbed into the skin the odor changes to a nutty, fatty aroma. When making products which are scented with opposing products (fruity or powdery scents come to mind) then we suggest limiting this oil to 5 to 10 % of your formulation. I put this oil in a roller ball bottle for personal testing. I have rolled it across my knuckles and rubbed in the oil. The skin becomes soft, dewy and appears more plump and elastic. I think the roller bottle is a great way to apply the oil and be able to carry it with you. The skin doesn't feel greasy, it does not appear shiny or glossy either. We think you will love it! Our tamanu oil is a cold pressed product from the dried nut kernel. 1 Gallon weighs approximately 7.65 lbs |
Wheat Germ Oil | |
![]() Recipes MSDS |
INCI = Tritium Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil
Saponification Value: 187 mg KOH / g of Fat Have you read about wheat germ? With the content of beta carotene and Vitamin E this oil is great for soaps, lotions and other skin care products. We can even improve on this whole scenario since our wheat germ oil is expeller pressed without the use of solvents! Isn't that great? And you know MMS likes to improve upon greatness so we only carry ultra refined wheat germ oil. You are probably wondering what this has to offer to the user, aren't you? Well, ultra refining improves the odor! If you have used wheat germ oil before, and eliminated it from your line of oils due to odor, try again! This oil will truly impress you. Our wheat germ has a slight nutty scent but is practically odorless! Yippee! Wheat germ is in our Lye Calculator so you can easily calculate the lye needed for your soap.
