Comfrey Lip Balm

The other day I asked myself why I have never used any of our wonderful extracts in lip products. Once I made sure the extracts are all lip safe (they are!), I set out to choose just one to enhance the effects of a nice lip balm.

Ingredients weighed before melting.

Seems like everyone’s having terrible winter weather, so I wanted to focus on something healing and moisturizing. I chose Comfrey Leaves Extract.

The extract is emollient, healing, anti-inflammatory, astringent, promotes tissue repair and is moisturizing to the skin. Comfrey leaves have a long history of being used as a healing herb. Let’s see how the extract does in a lip balm.

To create my formula, I went to the Recipes section of our website and looked up “Make Your Own Lip Balm” to get a starting point. After matching my supplies on hand with percentages needed, I came up with a formula. I’m going to use our wonderful Oil Perfection Base as part of my liquid oils, and this has an advantage for this lip balm; it already contains Aloe Extract and Orchid Extract to go along with the Comfrey Leaves Extract I’m using.

What You’ll Need

SUPPLIES

Beeswax
High Melt Point Shea Butter
Coconut Oil
Palm Kernel Oil
Oil Perfection Base
Castor Oil
Comfrey Leaves Extract
Green Apple Flavor

EQUIPMENT

Scale
Microwave-safe container
or Double Boiler
Spatula
Pipettes
Lip Balm Filling Tray
Lip Balm Tubes & Caps

Formula

21% Beeswax
15% High Melt Point Shea Butter
8% Coconut Oil
15% Palm Kernel Oil
27% Oil Perfection Base
10% Castor Oil
1% Comfrey Leaves Extract
3% Green Apple Flavor

50-gram text batch

10.5 grams Beeswax
7.5 grams High Melt Point Shea Butter
4 grams Coconut Oil
7.5 grams Palm Kernel Oil
13.5 grams Oil Perfection Base
5 grams Castor Oil
0.5 gram Comfrey Leaves Extract
1.5 grams Green Apple Flavor

Instructions

Weigh all ingredients but the Comfrey Leaves Extract and Green Apple Flavor into the container you’ll use to heat the mixture. Heat gently in microwave or double boiler, stirring often, until all waxes and oils have melted.

Add Comfrey Leaves Extract and Green Apple Flavor; stir well.

I highly recommend using a Lip Balm Filling Tray to hold the tubes steady while you pour or pipe the liquid lip balm into them.

Once tubes are filled, allow them to sit, still in the filling tray, until the lip balm has hardened. Then remove from the filling tray and put on caps and labels. Enjoy!

Notes

I used 3% of the presweetened Green Apple Flavor Oil, and I would like it to be stronger. Next time I think I’d use 4% of the Green Apple and maybe 1% of Sugar Baby or Caramel Toffee to give it a little boost.
