Making Lip Balm from Barbara’s Cupboard

Barbara asked for lotion or lip balm recipes that used lanolin, but she wanted to mask the odor of the lanolin without using too much flavor.Today I’ll share a lip balm that I formulated to meet Barbara’s requirements. Since this was a simple request, I formulated a recipe that used only 2% lanolin. This allowed the lanolin to contribute texture without also contributing an overpowering odor.

Collect needed items:

Castor Oil
Aloe Butter
Cocoa Butter, White
Avocado Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil
Sugar Baby Flavor Oil
Vitamin E Acetate
Green Tea Extract
Sea Buckthorn Extract
Mixing Container (Microwave Safe)
Transfer Pipettes
Containers for finished product (I used the 1 oz Jar Set.)


Recipe in ounces:
0.07 ounces Lanolin
0.53 ounces Castor Oil
0.88 ounces Beeswax
0.56 ounces Aloe Butter
0.56 ounces Cocoa Butter, White
0.88 ounces Avocado Oil
0.02 ounces Peppermint Essential Oil
0.02 ounces Sugar Baby Flavor Oil
0.04 ounces Vitamin E Acetate
0.02 ounces Green Tea Extract
0.02 ounces Sea Buckthorn Extract
Recipe in grams:
2 grams Lanolin
15 grams Castor Oil
25 grams Beeswax
15 grams Aloe Butter
15 grams Cocoa Butter, White
25 grams Avocado Oil
0.5 grams Peppermint Essential Oil
0.5 grams Sugar Baby Flavor Oil
1 grams Vitamin E Acetate
0.5 grams Green Tea Extract
0.5 grams Sea Buckthorn Extract
Recipe in Percentages:
2% Lanolin
15% Castor Oil
25% Beeswax
15% Aloe Butter
15% Cocoa Butter, White
25% Avocado Oil
0.5% Peppermint Essential Oil
0.5% Sugar Baby Flavor Oil
1% Vitamin E Acetate
0.5% Green Tea Extract
0.5% Sea Buckthorn Extract

Weigh all ingredients into your microwave safe container. Microwave using short bursts of time, stirring every 20 to 30 seconds until all the ingredients have been melted. Do NOT microwave until the mixture is completely liquid as the mixture will be too hot to handle. The Beeswax and Cocoa Butter will be the last ingredients to melt and if you are patient, simply stirring will melt the remainder of the Beeswax and Cocoa Butter. Using a transfer pipette, fill your lip balm tubes and allow to cool. Try to not move the containers much until the lip balm has set to prevent accidental messes.


Yield: This recipe will fill 23 of the lip balm tubes.

This lip balm doesn’t have the lanolin odor. The lanolin gives the lip balm a creamy smooth texture that glides onto your lips and is reminiscent of the texture of a high-end lipstick. The peppermint gives the lip balm a nice flavor without being overwhelming. While I like this lip balm as the formulation is currently, I know some people will want a stronger peppermint flavor.
