Making Your Own Cleaning Supplies - Bathroom Cleaners

20196989Since I have been making great progress on my new kitchen I thought, why not make some simple cleaning products for the bathroom? This is a great idea and an even better way to try out my new cleaning ingredients. What I’m looking for is a non-abrasive cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and a tile/grout cleaner.

Non-Abrasive Cleaner
Baking Soda
Lemon Juice

You will need to be aware that the baking soda and lemon juice will react with each other and create a foaming action. Make a paste using the baking soda and lemon juice (equal parts) then immediately apply on surface using a sponge to clean.

I used this on my bathroom counters and they are sparking clean, no more hair spray buildup, no toothpaste spots from the kids – perfect!

Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Baking Soda
White Vinegar

Plunge the toilet with your brush or swab to drain most of the water. This will sufficiently wet all surfaces and remove the excess water which only dilutes your cleaners. Sprinkle the baking soda inside the bowl and spray with vinegar. Scrub. This will also make a foaming action, a little bit of scrubbing will clean the bowl up nicely. Hard water rings in the toilet are very fragile. They seem annoying but it really only takes a slightly harder surface to remove those minerals. If the baking soda and vinegar routine do not break this line of hard water use a pumice stone stick. These are sold in the grocery store in the cleaning aisle. These sticks are cheap and will scratch away the hard water deposits without harming the porcelain bowl.

Bath Tile Cleaner
Chlorine bleach
Spray bottle

Mix 1 fluid ounce of Liquid Bleach into 21 ounces of water. Put in a spray bottle and label with contents and date. Spray the tile and tub with this product allowing all surfaces to remain wet for up to 10 minutes. Repeated spraying is likely to be necessary to keep all surfaces wet during this time. At ten minutes rinse with warm water and a damp sponge. When finished dry with a soft cloth. Mildew and mold should be gone!

Grout Cleaner
1 part hydrogen peroxide
2 parts water
Spray bottle

Combine in spray bottle. Spray grout and let sit for an hour, wipe with a damp sponge. This process should whiten grout that has become dingy over time.

NOTICE: As with all cleaners of any type (natural, gentle, strong, etc.) never combine cleaners. Toxic fumes can be released from mixing in compatible materials. Even the seemingly simple task of cleaning a house plant pot with bleach can be a terrible mistake. When in doubt about treatments to use, start with water and slowly increase with additions until the results are satisfactory.

If you are in a pinch and need to clean up a mess, remember that there is always an alternative out there that may save you money and help control the use of harsh chemicals in your home. Keep all household cleaners out of the reach of children and pets!

Happy Cleaning!
