Fragrance Testing in Cold Process Soap: Sweet Musk, Oak Leaves & Acorns, Hinoki Wood, Ginger, and Black Amethyst

I have more photos for our Fragrance Testing Series! This is a long series of blog posts that shows the testing of our fragrances in Cold Process Soap. We are testing ALL of the fragrances in our catalog at their maximum recommended usage rate for Cold Process Soap and showing you pictures of what the finished soaps look like in a side by side comparison with an unscented control batch. Since these fragrances are all being tested at their maximum recommended usage rate, I wouldn’t recommend using more fragrance. These soaps are strongly scented and will smell much stronger when wet.

Our first fragrance today in Cold Process Soap is Sweet Musk. Our catalog notes that “Sweet Musk is alluring. Sweet Musk is a fruity floral with peach peel and rose notes on a rich, woody, amber bottom.” A great unisex fragrance very sensual and amazing! If you are familiar with Coty’s Tribe fragrance we think you will love this Sweet Musk fragrance oil.There was minimal discoloration of note very pale barley there hues of beige. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our second fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Oak Leaves & Acorns. Under the description for Oak Leaves & Acorns, our catalog says “this was a staff favorite with our test samples and being gobbled up before we could stop the mad rush! Rustic pine, wild violets and fall leaves are the center of this intriguing new scent” A nice outdoorsy fall fragrance, gets you in the mood for some relaxing time out by a campfire or enjoying a pleasant hike through the flowery mountain side.There was not any discoloration of note and this means you can make that spring themed swirl you have always wanted without worrying about the fragrance causing discoloration. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our third fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Hinoki Wood. According to our catalog, Hinoki Wood is “warm essences of blonde-wood, cedar and patchouli are enhanced with vanilla musk, cinnamon, clove and uplifted with notes of fresh eucalyptus, lavender, orange blossom, jasmine and rose.” A spicy, woody, musky and very intriguing scent. A pleasant bouquet of floral and woody fragrance.There is a moderate light tan discoloration of note. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our fourth fragrance in Cold Process Soap is Ginger. According to our catalog, Ginger “has been the rage lately with Origins releasing their new line. We wanted to duplicate that sexy scent for our own soaps and lotions.” A warm and tranquil scent. I keep going back to this scent I can’t seem to get enough, definitely a way to enjoy your products.There is a minimal discoloration of note a soft pale barely there tan. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Our fifth and last fragrance for today in Cold Process soap is Black Amethyst type. Black Amethyst according to our catalog states that “This is our version of BBW Black Amethyst… lemon, bergamot and lavender are blended with peony, plum and pomegranate, with base notes of patchouli, sandalwood, amber, white musk and vanilla. The scent is certainly a fruity mix but is entirely dominated by deep, sensual notes.” There’s no doubt that is a favorite among the staff, this is an uplifting sweet floral sensation. Not overpowering but very pleasant and enjoyable, this is one of my top choices.There was not any discoloration of note and this means you can make that purple and white swirl you have always been dreaming of without worrying about the fragrance causing discoloration. We used the maximum suggested usage rate of 2.5%, which is 0.4 ounces of fragrance in our 1 pound test batch.

Recipe:

Our temperatures for lye and oils are between 125°F and 130°F to handle our currently cool weather. We make our soap with a 6% superfat. All of the batches we make are mixed to light trace and then the fragrance is added. After the fragrance is added we mix until the fragrance is incorporated and then we pour into the mold.
