Scary Face Mask for a Halloween Spa Day

Are you ready for Halloween? I am! I’m so excited for Halloween and the fun it brings. Costumes, cute kids and handing out treats. I love it all!

Finished samples of the mask!

Finished samples of the mask!

As a celebration for my anticipation of Halloween, we are going to make an awesome face mask. While I think this mask would be a great part of a Halloween themed spa treatment, you can make this year round and find it a staple in your bathroom.

This mask is perfect for any type of skin and I recommend using it only once or twice a week. I formulated this mask with the intention of leaving the skin feeling refreshed, but not dried out. I think I succeeded!

Let’s go play and have some scary, spooky fun!

Begin by weighing the water, Avocado Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Hydrovance and Stearic Acid into a microwave safe container. Once these items have been weighed into your container, heat using short time bursts. These ingredients will heat quickly, so don’t try to heat until everything looks liquid/melted. The Emulsifying Wax and Stearic Acid will still retain their shape even when heated. Once the ingredients have been heated, use a stick blender to completely mix together. Allow the mixture to cool until it reaches 120 ° F.

Since we have to wait for our mask base to cool, let’s use this time to weigh out our White Kaolin Clay and Activated Charcoal. Please move slowly while weighing the Activated Charcoal as it will easily become airborne and then you have it everywhere! If you want to easily mix the dry ingredients, weigh them into a plastic zipper bag, close the bag and then knead the ingredients together.

Now that the mask base has cooled below 120 ° F, we need add the Chamomile Extract, Liquid Germall Plus and Tea Tree Essential. Add these temperature sensitive ingredients and mix well into the mask base. Now we can mix our dry mask ingredients into our mask base. Gently add the dry ingredients and mix well. The mask will be clumpy for about 5 minutes while the clay and charcoal hydrate. I mixed the mask and then covered my mixing beaker so I could leave it alone. I left my mask for about 30 minutes and then mixed it again as the Charcoal had hydrated enough that it looked like little pools of black liquid. It isn’t anything to worry about, it is normal for Activated Charcoal.

Once the mask was mixed again, I scooped it into a bag for piping into my containers. I lined my jars up, cut a very small corner off and began piping the mask. It was fluid, so it ran rather than being piped. After the mask completely cooled, it has become a little bit thicker.

Why did I make a face mask with these ingredients? I found inspiration for this recipe from an old recipe I had in my notebooks. I changed some ingredients and percentages to get this recipe that you will fall in love with!

  • I chose White Kaolin for the minimal color that it would contribute and for the fabulous silky texture of Kaolin.
  • I picked Avocado Oil because it is the one oil I love because it is liked by all people regardless of skin type.
  • I added an emulsifier and thickener because I wanted to have a mask and lotion in one. I didn’t want the mask to make the facial skin feel dried and tortured. I wanted the face to feel pampered.
  • I selected Hydrovance because it is a wonderful long term and short term humectant.
  • I included Liquid Germall Plus because preservatives are very important!

Usage Instructions:
1) Rinse face with warm water.
2) Apply a thin layer of mask onto your face.
3) Allow mask to dry on your face or at least 5 minutes with a maximum amount of time being 15 minutes.
4) Once the mask is dry, gently wash face with a warm and damp washcloth.

I hope you found this mask recipe to be inspiring! What should I make next?
