Simple Daily Hair Conditioner

Completely cooled hair conditioner on my finger.

Completely cooled hair conditioner on my finger.

I have very fine and oily hair. My hair is a little longer than shoulder length and hasn’t been colored, straightened, curled or even been dried by a hair dryer! I prefer to wash my hair and let it air dry since my hair dries very quickly. Unfortunately, the oily nature of my hair means that washing my hair is a daily necessity to just look like a regular human being! I’ve discovered that the best way to deal with my hair is to wash with simple shampoo (or bar soap) and then follow up by applying a conditioner only to the bottom 3 inches of my hair.

Most hair care products available here in Beijing are formulated for the coarser Chinese hair that loses moisture quickly and therefore needs ingredients to help keep moisture in the hair shaft. I decided to make my own hair conditioner that would allow help me keep my hair tangle free by keeping the ends relaxed and smooth.

Let’s look at the reasons why that I chose these ingredients for this hair conditioner!

Conditioning Emulsifier is the important ingredient as it not only conditions hair, but also is a mild emulsifier which is important for hair care. If you want to make hair conditioners, the Conditioning Emulsifier is the best option.

I wanted to add Argan Oil because it is a very popular oil in hair care because Argan is a light weight oil that doesn’t feel greasy when used lightly, I felt it was a good ingredient for my hair and helping tame flyaways.

I added HoneyQuat as a humectant because it was originally made to be used in conditioners! It has been noted to help condition hair, assist in detangling and reducing dry hair static electricity.

I chose to add both Wheat Protein and Liquid Silk to the formula as a way to help keep hair from tangling and with moisture retention in the hair.

I love extracts in lotions, creams, lip balms as well in every possible project! I love extracts so much that I felt like I had to add extracts to this hair conditioner. I added Chamomile Extract and Horsetail Grass Extract for the sheen and protection they give hair. Remember, you don’t have to use the extracts I use, or even use extracts at all! If you don’t want to use extracts, simply increase the Argan Oil in this recipe.

Let’s go make some hair conditioner now!

Weigh all ingredients except the additives (extracts, fragrance and Liquid Germall Plus) into a microwave safe container. Heat in the microwave using short time bursts until everything is melted. Blend the ingredients to a smooth, creamy consistency using the immersion blender. Add the additives once the temperature drops to approximately 120° F in the mixing bucket. Stir gently until completely mixed. Pour into containers and allow to cool completely before labeling.

Hair Conditioner Notes: This light hair conditioner is perfect for daily use and even on my hair where I only use it on the bottom 3 inches of hair. I’ve used this conditioner for a while now and I have been pleased with how my hair feels as well as how easy it is to brush, whether I choose to leave down or put up in a ponytail/hair clip.
