Shea oil is back in the catalog with limited stock available! This shea oil has a semi-solid appearance to it, sometimes it is a viscous liquid and other times it is a semi-solid. Think of summer time being a time where you will get a more fluid product and winter time is when the oil will set up into a semi-solid right in the pail. If you want to play with shea but want a more fluid product for scrubs, cuticle oils, and massage oils, then the oil version is better than the butter version. Shea is very nice on the skin and it certainly gives skin a smooth feeling. Clays are well recognized for their ability to expand, a small amount of clay can absorb a significant amount of water. This proves to be an irreplaceable asset when creating masks and face muds. While most clays tend to have some degree of drying properties they are best suited for those skin types that tend to be more oily. Clays tend to want to clump when added to cold process soap. We have found it is easiest to incorporate by removing a small portion of soap before trace mixing the clay until all clumps are gone and then adding it back to your soap pot. Recommended usage is 1 teaspoon per pound.

MMS continues to work hard for our customers and cyclomethicone is the perfect example. There are a ton of cyclomethicone varieties available and MMS has chosen one, specifically cyclopentasiloxane, as the variety that will best suit our cutomers.

Cyclopentasiloxane has a higher flash point so you can ship your room sprays or perfumes on an airplane without worry. Other vendors sell a cyclomethicone that can't even ship to you via airplane! Be wary, your safety, and the safety of others, is very important. For your reference the flash point is 170 degrees F.

Cyclopentasiloxane is the perfect balance between volatility (quick drying) and spreadability. We think it is great for hair treatments, bath oils, creams and lotions, room/linen sprays, and more. Cyclopentasiloxane adds a soft, talc-like feel and is the base for superb dry perfume oils.

INCI labeling allows for the use of either name so please use the name most suited to your product and customer base.

Sodium lactate is a natural humectant, moisturizer and pH regulator. For lotions replace the liquid glycerin with sodium lactate, in soaps use up to 1/2 ounce per lb of fats to harden the bar. Produced from renewable resources and completely biodegradable makes sodium lactate a better choice when moisturization is desired. Studies have shown sodium lactate to be a better short term and long term moisturizer than glycerin, our long loved friend. Try the tests for yourself. Make your favorite lotion twice, once with glycerin and once with sodium lactate. Apply the lotion to your leg or arm twice daily for 2 weeks. We are sure you will notice the difference. Sodium lactate is less sticky when compared to liquid glycerin so if you are trying to formulate to make a less sticky lotion use sodium lactate instead of glycerin. Sodium lactate 60% USP.

We have added a bunch of paraben free moisturizers and now we get a body wash too! Remember, we still like parabens, we just think that options are good, too.

This base is almost crystal clear. It has a very slight odor of a body wash. An unscented body wash would be just as nice as a scented one because the base has such a slight odor. The base is pretty thick for a body wash. We even tested it for fragrance thinning (which can happen with some fragrances or excessive use of any fragrance). We still loved the final viscosity. Here is my quick Skin Frosting Scrub recipe: 9 oz wt Glycerin Scrub Base, 9 oz wt granulated white sugar, 1.8 mL fruity type fragrance like Paradise or Pixie Dust. Mix well. Add a drop or two of color if desired, add seeds, fiber or luffa if desired. Fills one 16 fl oz Deep Jar with Size 89 Cap. This mixture keeps the frosting appearance and always looks fresh made. The sugar does NOT settle to the bottom with a gooey layer on top like other recipes. This base is so easy and it makes everyone look like a professional scrub artist.

With this recipe in mind, it is best to calculate that about 18 ounces by weight will fill 16 fluid ounces in containers. This will translate into a gallon jug filling 2 gallons worth of jars.

Just before using this product gently rock the jug back and forth to make sure the base is completely mixed. Proceed with recipe. One final note, upon sitting overnight the scrub mixture you make will be a bit thicker.

In my opinion the Lanolin Lip Solutions is more like a creamy lipstick. The texture is a slightly tacky like an all day lipstick, which I love when my lips need a creamy coating.

The Shea Butter Lip Solutions is firm but not our firmest. It is creamy like shea butter but isn't tacky like lanolin can be. It is our most popular.

The Mango Butter Lip Solutions is most like the Shea Butter version. It is firm and wonderful with a tiny bit of gloss. It is comfortable to wear in all weather conditions.

The Soy Lip Solutions is a bit waxy and a bit creamy all in one. It is very firm, more firm than lanolin, shea butter or mango butter versions. This is the one I use most for salves and hand butters for my knitting bag.

Vegan is the most firm of all the Lip Solutions varieties. It has no animal fats in it, including beeswax. Because of this the Vegan is very easy to over heat. Don't set the Lip Solutions on the stove or in the microwave without attention. Stirring makes the last little bit melt. We have heard of many people who heat until all parts have melted and then stir for the first time. This is the fastest way to melt your pipettes or your tubes. Take caution here, stir throughout the melting cycle.

If you need to add a fixed oil to the Lip Solutions then choose Soy or Vegan because they are more likely to handle this addition without becoming too soft. The Body Butter 2 is the thickest of all our bases with an almost salve-like consistency. A little of this decadent body butter is perfect for the roughest feet, elbows, and even the driest hands! Since the Body Butter 2 is so thick, it does benefit from a little mixing for the easiest application. I love rubbing a small almond-sized amount in my hands to smooth it into a pliable cream that I apply to my feet after a long day at work.

Practically odorless, Body Butter 2 is opaque and deeply moisturizing while ready for scenting as you wish. Plan on using wide-mouth, shallow jars for the best scooping ability. You just won't believe how little is needed!

Love the feeling, but want a slightly lighter butter? Use a mixer to whip to help loosen and relax the body butter into a slightly less viscous cream.

We have been asked for some paraben free bases. This butter is just one of our new bases to follow this line. While we believe that parabens are safely used in cosmetics, we do understand there are times when a paraben free choice is appreciated.

This butter is the thickest of all our bases. It is almost a salve like consistency. I still remember a coal tar salve my Grandma had that was solid and had to be worked into a pliable mixture. This butter isn't quite that firm but it does benefit from a little mixing after sitting in the jar a while. This butter is for the roughest of feet, elbows and hands. This butter has a viscosity rating of 455,000 centistokes! The butter is opaque and deeply moisturizing. The base is practically odorless so it is ready for scenting as you desire. It doesn't take much butter to soften away the roughest of dry skin. Do plan on using wide-mouth, shallow jars. You just won't believe how little is really needed!

I expect that most of your customers will appreciate a 1/3 or 1/2 oz jar to carry around. Very little butter is needed, I promise. You work the numbers. If 1 gallon is broken down into 1/2 oz jars and sold for $ 4 each, the butter cost is only $ 53 but the income is over $ 1,000! There are 128 fl ounces in a gallon if you need a little help. Try doing the math after your morning coffee. ;-)

Oil Perfection is our wonderful oil base. Use this non-greasy formulation everywhere! We passed out scented samples with treatment pumps and labeled it as a beard oil. The first comment from a beard person is not printable as said exactly but he did say it was so awesome it was FABULOUS! During our tests, the guys who did not have treatment pumps easily used more than they needed. As you know, a little goes a long way for beard oils! Once we controlled the quantity they were using; all of the oil users were insanely happy. We learned that beard oil is a tricky thing - application is very easy to overdo, so please use a dropper or a treatment pump. A little bit goes a long way!

I used this oil on my hands and cuticles. Oh, my! My hands are so awesome looking now that I am sure I could be a hand model. The oil soaked in and doesn't leave any shine but my skin feels velvety. I've used this oil on my face with excellent results. I've used this oil in my hair with the same awesome results as the beard oil users. Aloe Powder is back in our catalog after a long time away. This powder is mixed 200:1 (200 parts water with 1 part aloe powder). This is sometimes called 200X. This really is that concentrated! The half ounce jar will make 101 ounces of aloe juice. The one pound jar will make 201 pounds of aloe juice, (just over 25 gallons)!

Aloe can be added to lotions, soaps, shampoo, conditioners and even masks. Look for any application where aloe might be used and try it!

Because this is a new product to most of you, and it brings the variable results of a botanical, please use this product lightly during testing - slowing increasing the usage rate until you are satisfied with the results. In soap we think the most economical usage with great final results are from 1-3% addition of aloe (as a reconstituted product).

The odor is a bright, but somewhat bitter, green note in the dried and concentrated form. When hydrated the odor is mild and pleasant. The key is dilution. Excessive use of aloe, or use of the dry material as an unhydrated material, may give an odd odor, but this has never been a problem for us when used in solution and in lower usage rates.

Have you been looking for luffa and wanted to keep your morning coffee, and your grinder, free from floating botanicals? Try our finely ground luffa!

Finely ground luffa is often used to create bar soaps with a cleansing abrasive. Can be added to facial or body scrubs. It's a natural way to exfoliate! We recommend a soap test batch of 1 lb of fat with 1 to 2 tsp of finely ground luffa. Don't think luffa is too expensive, the volume is HUGE in comparison to the weight making this additive very economical.  

Try a soap with lavender too, yet be prepared for whole buds to be VERY abrasive. We suggest grinding to a fine flour before adding to soap. It is always better to make one batch of soap with too finely ground lavender and say: Dear Self, next time you make Lavender Soap, leave the particles a little bigger. You never want to say Dear Self, next time LISTEN to MMS and grind FINELY! I now need to grow another 88 million layers of skin to repair this damage.

Most often these products are made with candle wax, either a low melt point type or a wax with added oil, then colored and scented as desired. Each cube is removed from the package when placed into a wick-less candle diffuser. These wickless candles are ceramic jars with shallow bowls on top, an electric light radiates a bit of light and heat which causes the wax to melt.

Be sure to pour into these containers as cool as possible. It is so easy to heat wax to very high temperatures, so please use a thermometer.

The wax is generally scented at 6 to 8%, but certainly you should consider the scent before determining the usage rate. Each cube is about 1 x 1 by 0.6 inches. Because the depth is not excessive, the wax should set up quickly.

Using this aerosol-like bottle is simple; fill the bottle with water or other desired product, LABEL, press cap down on to bottle and give a slight twist. The sprayer is now engaged on the bottle, and spraying can commence. I've been using a water-filled bottle to mist my feet and neck during this warm summer. I have used a bottle to mist my watercolor paints so I can enjoy a session of painting. I have even filled the sprayer with a light solid-surface cleaner (a bit of water and vinegar). The bottles and sprayers are white, so labeling is an absolute must.

Bottles are sold as singles, and as a 16-pack (which fits nicely in a box). I expect these bottles to be used with hydrosols, flower waters, dilute vinegar cleaners, and even plain water. I have enjoyed this sprayer at the dryer as I remove wrinkles with a few sprays and a quick shake. I know you will be so tickled to use this spray bottle for your fine-mist applications.

We have a couple of hints for users.
1) Pour the lip balm mixture as cool as possible. The tubes can become mis-shapen if the lip balm mix is super hot. Use our quick test to determine if your lip mixture is ready: stir the mixture with a pipette, hold the pipette horizontal after stirring, if the pipette bends downward then the mixture is WAY too hot. If the pipette holds it's rigid form and the mixture is still clear then the mixture is at perfect pouring temperature.
2) Load the tray with tubes just before filling. Long term storage of tubes held in the tray can cause temporary distortion of the tubes. To return tubes to their original shape, remove them from the tray and allow them to sit without their caps for a few days.
3) Allow the filled tubes to fully cool before removing from the tray. This may take a hour depending on the temperatures of the lip balm mixture and the room where you are working. Then, when the tubes are cool, give the tube a twist just before pulling straight out. The lip balm mixture at the top of the tube (the glorious crown!) can be damaged if the lip balm is too soft when removed from the tray. Patience is certainly an asset in this case.

ATTENTION! Before you use this tray please look VERY closely at the tutorial. Specifically look at the picture that shows the first pour into the tray. There are three tubes that have been filled and the fourth tube is being filled in the photo. We want you to notice the cooled lip balm mixture around the top of the Pyrex container. Please stir your lip balm mixture until it develops a haze just like this photo. If you pour while the lip balm is still too hot then the tubes can be temporarily warped. When the warping happens the caps may not fit tightly. If you will cool the lip balm mixture until a haze develops the chances of warping the tubes is greatly decreased.

What happens if you have poured too hot? Well, we suggest placing the cap on the tube then fitting a shrink band over the tube and heat shrinking the band. This short period of heating will relax the plastic tube and allow it to go back to the original size.

Where would you use a shaker like this? Well, I first used it to contain all the dried peppers I made last year, and ground up into a powder. Easy shaking in the kitchen now! I have a HOT jar, and a MILD jar. You've got to warn a body, ya know?

Secondly, I used this jar to make a carpet freshener. A bit of lavender buds, some baking soda and a small amount of essential oil. Sprinkle on the carpet and vacuum up after 10 minutes.
